The Kidney:
1.) Stores essence and dominates development and reproduction
2.) Dominates water metabolism
3.) Receives chi
4.) Dominates bone
5.) Opening to the ear
5.) Opening to the ear
"Essence" in this case means the material base of the human body. There are two types: congenital and acquired. Congenital is inherited, while acquired is the essential substance of food and water. Since the acquired essence replenishes the congenital essence, it is the most important. On the other hand our reproduction and development all depends on the health of the kidneys and it's state can be reflected in the hair.
In the kidney is where yin and yang are housed and is often referred to as "the house of water and fire." The yin is referred to as essence and the chi is referred to as yang. These two forces are constantly promoting and restricting each other to maintain an equilibrium, once this balance is disrupted pathological changes will manifest in the kidney. If the yin is low, the yang (which is hyperactive) will create heat sensations in various parts of the body. On the other hand if yang is deficient, then symptoms will consist of coldness and pain the lumbar region.
2.) Dominates water metabolism
The kidney is a key role in regulating the distribution of body fluids and under normal conditions the kidney will "open and close" to maintain regularities. The process consists of receiving fluid in the stomach, which is transported by the spleen to the lung, during this process the kidney takes in some of the fluids and divides it into two liquids, clear and turbid. The liquid is transported to the lung for distribution throughout the body, while the turbid liquid flows to the bladder and disposed off in urine.
3.) Receives chi
The kidney helps the lung in receiving and descending chi. When the kidney is strong, then passage of chi in the lungs is free allowing for smooth and even breathing. If the kidney is weak, then it gives way to shortness of breath and difficulty of inhalation.
4.) Dominates bone
Since the kidney stores essence that essence is used to create marrow (both spinal and bone), which fills the bone cavities. If the kidney is strong then production of marrow is thriving and result in strong teeth, while a weak kidney gives way to weakness and soreness in various parts.
In the kidney as well essence and blood have a concurrent relationship. The state of the two substances can be reflected in the hair. As for the elderly, when people age their hair typically turns white which means the kidney chi is weakening, therefore it is important to maintain kidney health if we want to avoid white hairs in the future.
5.) Opening to the ear
Lastly when kidney chi is healthy and sufficient, then the sense of hearing is acute and well-nourished. And if the kidney is not well nourished, then deafness and tinnitus can result.
